I've Officially Become That Guy...

Written by Brandon Smith | Oct 12, 2026

Well, this is awkward.

Normally, I use this little corner of your inbox to share a story, offer some encouragement, or occasionally convince you that insurance is more interesting than you think.

Today, I'm using it to promote a podcast.

A podcast I happen to host.

And a podcast Glidewell happens to sponsor.

So, yes, apparently, we've reached the point where I'm writing a Slidegood to promote a show where I interview people, sponsored by the company where I work.

My mother would be so proud. My marketing professor not so much.

But stick with me, because there's actually a reason I'm sharing this.

Okay, hear me out...

Everybody has a story. And I've become convinced that most of us don't spend nearly enough time listening to them.

A few years ago, I started The Missoula Podcast with a simple idea: Sit down with interesting people, ask good questions, and see where the conversation takes us.

More than 165 episodes later, I've learned something.

The most interesting thing about people is rarely what they do. It's who they are, what they've experienced, what they've overcome, and what they've learned along the way.

And Missoula is full of those people.

We've had some pretty incredible conversations.

  • Josh Smith: He made his first knife at 11 years old. Today, he's built one of Montana's most recognizable brands, Montana Knife Company. An incredible story of passion, persistence, entrepreneurship, and what happens when you refuse to give up on a dream.
  • The Minimalists: What if the secret to a richer life was actually owning less? A thought-provoking conversation about letting go of what doesn't matter to make more room for what does.
  • Will Cherry: From the hardwood at the University of Montana to the highest levels of professional basketball. Will shares the highs, the setbacks, and the lessons learned chasing a dream that started long before the spotlight.
  • Bob Powell: Missoula history, the legendary Montana Club, and, of course, those iconic Hoagie Cheese Fries. A nostalgic trip through the people, places, and flavors that have helped make Missoula feel like home for generations.
  • Governor Greg Gianforte: From building successful businesses to leading the state of Montana, a conversation about entrepreneurship, leadership, and the experiences that shape the person behind the politics.
  • Jill Valley: For decades, she's been the familiar face delivering Montana's news. But what happens when the person who's spent her career telling everyone else's stories gets to share her own? A personal look at life behind the anchor desk and the impact of a career dedicated to our community.
  • Mayor Andrea Davis: What does it really take to lead the community you call home? A candid conversation about the opportunities, challenges, and responsibilities that come with helping shape Missoula's future.

Different backgrounds. Different experiences. Different perspectives.

But here's what I find fascinating.

Everybody has something to teach us.

Not just the people with impressive titles, successful businesses, or thousands of social media followers.

The neighbor down the street. The person sitting next to you at your kid's basketball game. The small business owner who opens the doors every morning. The person who's quietly overcome something you know nothing about.

Every one of them has a story.

And every story has the potential to change the way we see the world.

One of the things I've learned from hosting this podcast is that curiosity is one of the most underrated ways we can show someone we care.

Ask a question. Listen to the answer. Then ask another question.

It's amazing what happens when people realize you're genuinely interested in their story.

And that brings me back to Glidewell.

We talk a lot about our purpose: Insurance is the tool. Health is the goal.

But health is bigger than an insurance policy.

It's the strength of our relationships. The communities we build. The people we encourage. The connections that remind us we're part of something bigger than ourselves.

That's why Glidewell is proud to sponsor The Missoula Podcast.

Not because the world needs another middle-aged guy with a microphone. Trust me, we're dangerously close to reaching capacity.

But because we believe our community is stronger when we know each other a little better.

So, here's my challenge this week.

Be more interested than interesting.

Ask someone about their story. Ask a second question. Maybe even a third.

You might discover something extraordinary about someone you've known for years.

And if you're looking for a little inspiration along the way, I'd love for you to check out The Missoula Podcast.

More than 165 episodes. Hundreds of stories. And one host who still can't believe people agree to sit across from him for an hour.
